Those were the days when people gradually began to recover from the dark rule of the Nizam, marking the start of an intellectual awakening in Telangana. Long before other districts conceived the idea of establishing higher learning institutions, the people of Nizamabad envisioned founding a college of their own.
In 1953, the idea of starting a college at Nizamabad was proposed by prominent personalities of the district, leading to the formation of a committee under the leadership of late Sri Choutpalli Hanmanth Reddy, the then Chairman of Zilla Parishad. In 1956, Sri C.K. Murthy, then District Collector, revived this initiative through the Indur Educational Cooperative Society, with Sri G. Rajeshwar Reddy as President and Sri K. Hanmanth Reddy as Secretary.
The erstwhile Government of Hyderabad, led by Dr. Burgula Ramakrishna Rao, provided a grant of ₹50,000 to launch the college. This fund-raising effort culminated in a generous donation of ₹51,000 by local philanthropist Sri Girrajmalji Agarwal, after whom the college is named.
The college officially opened on June 12, 1956, in the premises of the Quilla Jail. It was fortunate to have Sri P.L. N. Serma, a distinguished educator from Osmania University, as its founding Principal, who established an excellent reputation for the institution. The college was supported by a dedicated team of teachers, including Sri S. Lakshman Rao, Sri K. Gangareddy, and Sri K.V. Narsimhacharyulu, among others. Sri P. Linga Reddy served as the first librarian.
Initially, the college offered a Pre-University Course (PUC) with just 92 students. The following year, it expanded to include Arts and Sciences at the degree level, and the Faculty of Commerce was introduced in 1958. The college was taken over by the Government in December 1960 and later moved to new premises.
In 1981, the college began offering Post Graduate Courses in M.A. English and M.A. Economics. It celebrated its Silver Jubilee on April 2-4, 1982, in grand fashion.
To meet the needs of the minority community, Urdu Medium Sections for B.A. and B.Com were started in 1988. Five additional P.G. Courses, namely M.Com, M.Sc. in Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology, and Physics, were introduced under a self-financing system in 2001-02.
The college underwent assessment and accreditation by NAAC on January 27-28, 2004, receiving a commendable B+ rating. Another milestone was achieved when the University Grants Commission recommended the college for autonomy, which was granted by Osmania University, effective from the 2004-2005 academic year.
Having completed 50 years in 2006, the college celebrated its Golden Jubilee on January 20-21, 2008. It was also awarded the status of “College with Potential for Excellence” (CPE) by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.
Currently, the college is progressing under the able guidance of Principal Smt. Moriah Eunice, who tirelessly works for the all-round development of this prestigious institution. She has received several national awards, including the “Jewel of India,” “National Mahilarathan,” and “Eminent Educationist” awards.
Additionally, Dr. Mohd. Nazim Ali, Lecturer in Urdu, and Dr. V. Rajendra Prasad, Lecturer in Economics, have both received the "Best Teacher" award from the State Government in 2009 and 2010, respectively, adding further glory to this institution’s rich history.
Girraj Government College (Autonomous) Nizamabad, established on 12 th july in 1956, has been a beacon of knowledge and growth for generations of students. However, despite its rich history, the college lacked an official Alumni Association for nearly six decades. This void was finally filled on September 15, 2018, when the Alumni Association was founded during the principalship of Sri.K. Dubba Rajam.
Dr. Dandu Swamy, a visionary educator, took the reins as the founder Convener/Secretary of the Association. This marked the beginning of a new era of collaboration and growth between the college and its esteemed alumni.
Under the leadership of successive Principals, the Alumni Association has spearheaded numerous developmental programs. Notably, during Dr. E. Laxminarana's tenure, the Association laid the groundwork for various initiatives. Currently, under the principalship of Dr. P. Ram Mohan Reddy, the Association is making significant strides.
The Alumni Association has undertaken several infrastructure development projects, transforming the college campus. Some notable achievements include:
These projects were made possible through generous donations from alumni of various batches and especially from 1975-1978 and 1978-1981.
The Alumni Association's tireless efforts have created a vibrant ecosystem, fostering connections between past and present students. As the Association continues to flourish, it:
The Alumni Association of Girraj Government College (Autonomous) Nizamabad stands as a testament to the power of collective giving and commitment to education.
